mé mǎ dá | “谝闲传” 里,都是陕西话的亲

"You finally showed up!"

“你咋才来嘛!”

An old regular at the tea stall beneath Xi’an’s ancient city wall raised his purple clay teapot

西安城墙根下的老茶客一扬手里的紫砂壶

His Qin opera-like tone wafting through the air, infused with the earthy aroma of brewed Fú brick tea

秦腔般的声调裹着泡开的茯茶香扑面而来

This melodious, winding greeting

这声带着拐弯的问候

Holds within it the vibrant soul of Shǎnxī people—

藏着陕西人最鲜活的灵魂——

The land of Sānqín, expressed in dialect

方言里的三秦大地

Is never just a geographical term from textbooks

从来都不是教科书上的地理名词

But a tangible, olfactory, and flavorful world of lived experience

而是能摸能闻能咂摸出滋味的烟火人间

The Guānzhōng phrase "kèlīmǎcā" (hurry up) Embodies an innate efficiency etched into one’s bones

关中话里的“克里马擦

是刻在骨子里的爽利

At the morning market, a vendor wields a metal spatula while stir-frying chilies

早市上的摊主挥着铁铲炒辣子

Yelling, “Anyone want a stuffed bun? Hurry up (kèlīmǎcā)!”

喊一声“要夹馍的赶紧,克里马擦!”

From the rising steam bursts not only the fragrance of meat

蒸汽里蹦出的不仅是肉香

But also the no-nonsense spirit of Guānzhōng people

还有关中人不拖泥带水的性子

Yet, turning to a familiar customer, the same vendor might leisurely ask, “Have you eaten?”

可转头遇见熟客,又会慢悠悠地问“吃咧没?”

The drawn-out inflection of the tone stretches like hand-pulled noodles

尾音拖得像扯面的线条

Its warmth soothing enough to comfort the heart

热乎劲儿能熨帖到心里

The dialect of Northern Shǎnxī is a song born from the Loess Plateau

陕北话是黄土高坡上长出来的歌

Words like “póyí” (wife/woman) and “hòushēng” (young man) carry the gritty texture of windblown sand

“婆姨”“后生”这些词带着风沙的粗粝

But when old men sit on the hillside chatting

可听老汉们坐在硷畔上拉话

A phrase like “Wow, the mountain lilies here are blooming so vibrantly!”

一句“这搭的山丹丹开得艳咋咧”

Suddenly makes even the roughest words blossom like flowers

硬邦邦的字眼突然就开出了花

The “sheep-herding throat and cattle-calling voice” in Xìntiānyóu folk songs

信天游里的“拦羊嗓子回牛声”

Blend life’s bitterness and sweetness into their melodies

把日子的苦与甜都揉进腔调里

Making one’s heart tremble with emotion.

唱得人心里发颤

Southern Shǎnxī, by contrast, offers a gentler tone

陕南则是另一番温柔

A Hànzhōng girl saying “mòdésì” (no problem)

汉中姑娘说“莫得事”

Lifts the ending note softly

尾音轻轻上扬

Like the ripples of the Hàn River gently swaying

像汉江的水波晃了晃

In Ānkāng, “chīfàn” (eat a meal) becomes “dǎi fàn”

安康人把“吃饭”叫“逮饭”

A word tinged with the boldness of mountain folk

带着点山民的豪迈

Yet softened by the misty dampness of the Qín-Bā mountains

却又被秦巴山区的水汽润得软乎乎

Walking through the old streets of Zhènbā

走在镇巴的老街上

Hearing someone ask, “Where you off to?”

听着“克哪儿去嘛”的问询

you might momentarily wonder whether you’re in Shǎnxī or Shǔ (Sìchuān)

恍惚间竟分不清是在陕西还是蜀地

These earthy expressions conceal the most vivid philosophies of daily life

这些带着土味的表达,藏着最生动的生活哲学

“zāshì” means pretending to be impressive

“扎势”是假装的体面

“cíchuí” is a lovingly scolding term for someone slow-witted

“瓷锤”是嗔怪的亲昵

“mé mǎdá” is the most reliable promise

“么马达”是里最踏实的承诺

When Xi’an youths use “měi tài tài” (fantastically great) to describe a bowl of shredded steamed bread in broth

当西安的年轻人用“美太太”形容一碗泡馍

And when Yán’ān kids dash through cave dwellings shouting “I get it!” (hài hā le)

当延安的娃娃喊着“害哈了”跑过窑洞

Dialect becomes a code embedded in their veins.

方言就成了血脉里的密码

No matter how far they go

不管走多远

Hearing it immediately tells them:

一听就知道

“Hey, fellow Shǎnxī native, you’re back, right?”

“乡党,你回咧?”

Those twilight hours spent “shooting the breeze” (piǎn xián chuán)

那些“谝闲传”的黄昏

The joyous chaos of “feast gatherings” (chī xí)

那些“吃席”的热闹

the tacit understanding conveyed in “casual chats” (yán chuán)—

那些“言传”间的默契

These can only be expressed flavorfully and authentically in dialect.

只有用方言说出来才有滋有味

Now, isn’t that the truth? (dé shì?)

才算真正的“得是?”
