In 1904, an Irish teacher from New Zealand, Isabella, came to China to visit her relatives. Before leaving, she brought back a packet of kiwi fruit seeds. Later, the local nursery workers used these seeds to cultivate a series of varieties, including the one named "Hayward", and called them "Chinese currants". In 1959, to expand the market in the United States, New Zealand renamed kiwi fruit as "kiwi" (the national bird of New Zealand), and thus "kiwi fruit" gradually became widely known to the world.

1904年，新西兰女教师伊莎贝尔来中国探亲，临走时带回了一包猕猴桃种子。后来，当地苗圃工作者通过这把种子培育出以海沃德为代表的一系列品种，并称为“中国醋栗”。1959年，为拓展美国市场，新西兰便以国鸟“kiwi”重新命名猕猴桃，于是“kiwi fruit”（奇异果）开始逐渐为世人熟知。
